Chapter 11

“No, I am not going to remain here while she might be in danger,” Hamish growled at his brother.

“You cannae travel yet, you could set yourself back. You are still in pain,” James responded.

“Rather that than go out of my mind wondering if she is safe or not,” Hamish said.

James leaned back on the chair. “I cannae understand ye, brother. She has refused you more than once, and you are still determined to follow her. Do you not think it is time to give up?”

“And let the only woman I have ever wanted to marry disappear from my life? You do not know me very well if you think I can just walk away from her, especially when her safety is at risk.”

“But she has refused you. Surely it is unfair to keep pestering her?”

“She thinks I will be like her father, flaunting mistresses about town.”

“And will you?”

“I cannot believe you have asked me that!” Hamish exclaimed in disgust.

“You have broken more hearts than I have been in battles, and I’ve been in too many to count,” James said reasonably. “What makes you think you can change from how you have lived so far?”

“I didn’t believe I could until I really thought about it,” Hamish acknowledged. “When I first met her, I considered her a spinster with a sharp tongue, but then I realised she was making me laugh and sparring with her was what I looked forward to most in the day.”

“That was when you were in Scotland,” James pointed out. “Being in London, surrounded by temptation is an entirely different matter.”

“Are you telling me that you have been unfaithful to Alice?”

“I could happily kill you for even uttering that sentence,” James said, voice low and dangerous. “I would never look at another woman because I have found the perfect one.”

“She is perfect for you.”

“Then I dinnae expect you ever to suggest something which is a slur to her more than it is to me. No man lucky enough to marry Alice would ever look at another woman. I certainly willnae be doing that. I promised her on our wedding day, and I meant every word.”

“I am sorry, I meant no slur towards Alice, I like her a lot. But I am, I admit, badly, trying to make a point. When you meet the right woman, no one else will do.”

“But Alice wanted to marry me. I just had the issue of that woman to sort out before we could be happy,” James said, refusing to mention the name of the woman who had not only tried to force him into marriage but had caused a rift between himself and his now dead best friend.

“Yet, you bungled it time and again,” Hamish said. “When Serena had left Scotland with Alice, I could not get her out of my mind. I needed to be with her as if part of me was missing.”

“Aye, I know that feeling all too well,” James said, reminded of his turbulent journey to happiness.

“I was more than happy to marry her after the incident at Vauxhall Gardens, and I still am.
